Statesmen Trounce Argos at Home

CLEVELAND, Mississippi – Delta State University’s offensive dominance included five Statesmen scoring in double figures en route to a 74-48 victory over West Florida on Thursday night at Walter Sillers Coliseum.

Delta State carried their offensive rampage from its previous game into the contest with West Florida. DSU started the game on an 8-0 run, capped by a PJ Davis dunk at the 15:58 mark. The Green-and-White took a 36-29 advantage into the locker room at halftime.   Continuing to build on its lead, Delta State used baskets from beyond the arc and in the paint to take a 15-point edge, 44-29, courtesy of a Devin Schmidt 3-pointer with 17:05 to go in the game. Five Statesmen scored in double figures: Schmidt (14), Jack Madgen (13), Davis (11), Zelvin Smith (11) and Kilpatrick (10). All but one player that saw playing time scored at least two points.

Schmidt’s 14 points gives him 1,633 in his career and remains third on the all-time scoring list. He is 148 points behind the second leading scorer in DSU history, Sammy Little (1966-69), who has 1,781. The junior guard needs five 3-pointers and two attempts to reach the top spot in the record book. He has 191 made in 480 attempts in his tenure with the Green-and-White. UWF (3-16, 2-14 Gulf South) was led by freshman Rashaan Benson’s 16 points. Junior Justin Williams made 3-of-4 from behind the arc for nine points.
