Delta State Women's Cross Country season kicked off on Sept. 3, at Christian Brothers University in Memphis, Tenn., but training began long before then. "It's a tough sport," said Coach Doug Pinkerton, who accepted the head coach position for cross country at Delta State 13 years ago. The girls’ typical practice is full of intense workouts. Sept. 17, marked the third game of the season for the Statesmen. They faced their first away game against the West Georgia Wolves who are currently ranked No. 3. The Statesmen were first to score in the afternoon game on Saturday. Freshman defensive end Zane Samuel came up big when he blocked West Georgia's punt and returned it for the touchdown. The Lady Statesmen of Delta State experienced great amounts of success this basketball season. The Lady Statesmen captured their 16th GSC Women's Basketball Tournament title and the first since 2008-09. DSU finished as the GSC Tournament runner-up the last two seasons falling to Union in last years final 62-50. Chelsey Rhodes was named the Tournament's Most Outstanding Player while Alondrea Rush earned her way on the all-tournament squad. CLEVELAND, Mississippi. – The Delta State University men's basketball team snapped a two-game losing streak with an 86-71 win over the Shorter University Hawks on Thursday. JACKSON, Tennessee. – Despite a comeback-effort during the second half, the Delta State University men's basketball team dropped its third straight game in a 51-48 loss to Union University on Thursday at Fred DeLay Gym. Two Statesmen scored in double digits. Devin Schmidt led the team with 16 points, followed by freshman Brett Warner, who had a career-high 15. The score was tied seven times during the game.
