Cleveland, Miss.— Delta State University is gearing up to host its’ annual service project, the Big Green Event, which will take place on March 29th, 2025.
The Big Green Event is a large-scale service project that is put on by students attending Delta State University. The event takes place in the spring semester of each school year and is a way for Delta State students to give back to the Cleveland community. This event allows the university and its students to connect with the community, while also improving the conditions of various areas throughout the city. Although the Big Green Event is only a one-day project, the magnitude of students who are involved in this event results in a huge impact across the community.
Examples of the projects that students take on during the Big Green Event are yard work, painting, organizing, planting, and cleaning up. Last year, the project saw over 150 students participate at 14 different project sites. Each of these students combined to reach approximately 475 hours of community service. On its website, the Delta State University Student Government Association states, “The Student Government Association and student organization of Delta State University are committed to service and citizenship in our local community. Students at Delta State University are interested in making a difference in the community, and that starts with the Big Green Event.” The website goes on to emphasize, “Our goal for the Big Green Event is to get committed students to contribute positively to serving and improving our community.” In 2024, service projects included cleaning up a garden area near the Bolivar County Library, repainting a mural at Cleveland Central Middle School, and packing bags for the Hayes Cooper Elementary School students who were moved to Delta State after a fire in their school building.
Delta State University’s Student Government Association designates a member to service as the Director of the Big Green Event each year. This year, that individual is sophomore Brady Roehm. Roehm is responsible for planning the entire day’s events, as well as choosing project sites for students to visit. Individuals can submit a project site request if they have an area that they would like to be involved in the event. Roehm will contact individuals who submit a project site request to discuss the specific details of the project. Roehm can be reached at sgatbge@deltastate.edu. There is also a community job application form available on Delta State’s website under the “Big Green Event” tab. This year, the Student Government Association along with the general study body is gearing up to participate in another successful day of serving the community. Students are preparing for jobs in areas such as raking leaves, weeding, planting flowers, clearing debris, cleaning gutters, wallpapering, window washing, and stripping paint.
