CLEVELAND, MS.— Cielee Hollon, a Junior Flight Operations major, is running for Student Government President for two reasons: to promote change and increase diversity. In at least the last ten years, there has not been an Asian SGA President, nor has there been an African American vice president. This is just one of the many areas of Delta State University that Hollon and her running mate, Jamaal Bryant, want to see an increase in diversity. “I wanted to get involved in SGA to make a difference, but also because I wanted to see someone like me participating,” says Hollon.
Also in increasing representation, Cielee Hollon wants to see more people outside of Greek Life participating in Student Government and other activities. “The majority of participants are members of fraternities and sororities, and that does not fully represent our university,” Hollon revealed when discussing her push to promote diversity. “There are many more people that are not adequately represented on campus, and I want to change that.”
If elected, Hollon wants her first order of business to be celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander Month. This month of celebration and representation falls in May, when school dismisses and the majority of students go back home for the summer. Cielee, who served in Public Relations for the SGA her sophomore year, wants to make sure that AAPI members still get to see themselves represented by Delta State, even though those very students may not be on campus for the entire month of May. Cielee Hollon and Jamaal Bryant want to bring everyone to the table, and promote inclusion and diversity among all the students at Delta State University.
