The Okra Spotlight is on Ace
Aspriona “Ace” Gilbert is a junior red shirt for the Lady Statesmen basketball squad. After transferring from her successful career at Northwest Community College, she received the newcomer award for the 2015-2016 basketball season.
The Delta State news crew was able to catch up with Ace and ask her some questions:
Why did you choose to transfer to Delta State?
Gilbert: I chose to transfer to Delta State because it’s close to home & my parents are able to come to almost every game. Also, I loved the coaching staff and the team!
Did you like your first season? Why or why not?
Gilbert: Yes, I couldn’t have asked for a better team to be a part of. Also the team had a great year & we won a ring!
What have you done to take steps forward in preparation from last season to this upcoming season?
Gilbert: I stayed here during the summer to try and improve my strength, conditioning, and, overall, my basketball skills.
What are your expectations for this season?
Gilbert: My expectations are to do just as well as last year, but to keep going further into the tournament.
What’s been your favorite part of being a Lady Statesmen so far?
Gilbert: My favorite part has been just getting to know the team and going to battle with them on the court every day.
Needless to say, Gilbert is ready for the upcoming season. She says coming to Delta State was one of the best decisions she ever made. She was able to connect with new people both on and off the court. She, also, finally achieved the championship ring she’d been chasing for 16 years. Looking for a repeat this year, Gilbert is excited about the season, and so are we.
