Okra Spotlight: Jessica Byrd

Jessica Byrd is an artistic and proud alumnus of Delta State University. Byrd graduated in 2004 with a BA in Art. Her favorite artists are Vincent van Gogh and Georgia O’Keeffe. Byrd loves experimenting with color, texture, movement, and different media, which is evident in her wonderful masterpieces.

“Delta State University has such a fabulous art department, and I feel so fortunate to have had the opportunity to study under such talented and knowledgeable instructors.” Byrd stated.

She is currently an elementary art teacher with 13 years of experience at Indianola Academy. She has an art studio near her home in Sunflower County.

Byrd spends most of her free time painting or making pottery. She periodically hosts painting and pottery classes for children and adults at her art studio. There is an upcoming event Byrd will be hosting and will be sponsored by Delta State University Office of Continuing Education.

Continuing Education is an outreach office for the university offering noncredit personal enrichment classes and camps for children and adults throughout the year. The event, called Artistic U: Delta State Pride, is where Byrd will guide participants through the process of painting a wood DSU door hanger. Each wooden piece is 30” x 15”. All supplies and materials are included. The cost of this artistic extravaganza is $40 and pre-registration is required. On Thurs., March 9, 2017, Byrd looks forward to seeing eager artists at 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the H.L. Nowell Student Union in room 306B.

Byrd looks forward to hosting more events at DSU and to be more involved with the Art Department.
