(A Bird) A Shadow
A Poem by Kole Oakes
I face outside
through the grimy windows
and wash away flakes of
food from the bowl –
The sun shines onto the silver of the faucet,
reflecting back light of the sun
straight into my eyes
and the reflection doesn’t hurt
like the sun did the times
I looked straight at it –
And as I place the bowl in the dish rack
I am at this moment
aware of who I am –
And as I look up
I see on the window
the shadow of a bird
sitting on a wire
and just as I am aware
of what I am seeing
the bird flies away
and I know this
only because now
in the window
is just the shadow of a wire –
