Tradition in the Delta
Pig Pickin’ is a traditional and annual Delta State University event that has been going on for about three decades and is located behind the football field at Statesmen Park. As the years go by, Pig Pickin’ gets better because more people come back to support and celebrate the DSU football team.
Thirty years ago, Mr. Hugh Ellis Walker, along with the rest of the Alumni-Foundation staff, wanted to celebrate the first home football game of the season. As a result, Pig Pickin’ was created and has become one of the most popular events on campus. People look forward to tailgating, enjoying live entertainment from DSU’s Delta Music Institute (DMI), the BBQ competitions, and most importantly, a football game to end it all off.
The night before the game, Pig Pickin’ After Dark, you can visit the fraternity tents if you like to dance and have fun from 6 p.m. to 12 a.m., or you can visit the BBQ tents to try some of the food before the competition. The day of the game, Pig Pickin’ begins at 6:30 a.m., with small events like the Hog Run, Annual Corn-hole Tournament, BBQ competitions, and the pep-rally are stretched out through the day until kickoff begins at 6 p.m.
