Beyond the blitz and glamor of the stage, Taylor Swift is thriving in the business world. Not only is she officially the number one artist in the world according to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, but she is a savvy businesswoman all over the globe.
Swift’s Rising in Society
In 2005, Taylor Swift made her big debut at an early age and signed her first record deal at age 15 with Big Machine Records. By this time, she was already performing at local venues in Nashville, Tenn.
Swift quickly realized that her success would stem from building a brand of her own. Swifty after joining the world of music, she began building her own image and reputation. Swift has always been strict about her brand, and her fans tend to enjoy her more due to her authentic personality.
Swift is also known to have riveting merchandise that entices her fans. She sells clothing, phone cases, jewelry and a fan-favorite cardigan.
Another strategy Swift employs is her “Easter Eggs.” Swift tends to drop subtle hints about upcoming albums or new tracks in her Instagram, Twitter, and Tik Tok posts. She will also use her clothes as a way to reveal to her fan base that she has something planned.
Some examples of these “Easter Eggs” are whenever Swift posted a picture on Instagram in April of 2020, and captioned it “not a lot going on at the moment.”
Swift also dropped an “Easter Egg” whenever she released “Red (Taylor’s Version)” merch and priced the signed CD at $20.10, the year that “Speak Now” was released.
This is one of the biggest marketing ploys that Swift uses. Her fan base (Swifties), tend to make lots of commotion whenever they suspect she has something planned. This creates a worldwide speculation that ultimately brings her more streams, purchases, and fans (Re-Edition).
Swift’s Private Jet
Although Taylor Swift strives to keep her reputation humble and authentic, she has gotten a lot of backlash on her private jet emissions and according to the Change Climate Project, she harms the environment momentously.
Swift is known to use her private jets to fly extremely small amounts of space. Recently one of her planes flew about 37 minutes from New Jersey to Baltimore. As claimed by Vice, this plane ride is said to have produced about 6613 pounds of carbon dioxide.
In an interview with Vice, Swift stated, “I offset the emissions from those trips.” Because she buys carbon credits.
As stated in Chooose Today, Carbon credits are a market-based instrument that helps organizations and the government address the greenhouse gas emissions that planes produce by funding projects to reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
Although she invests in these carbon credits, she still produces about 17,640,000 pounds of carbon dioxide a year.
This fiasco has led Swift to take a great deal of backlash on her reputation and business.
Swift’s Impact on the Economy
Although there is much backlash about Swift’s carbon footprint, as stated by Common Sense Institution, she still greatly improves the economy.
Recently, Swift’s “Eras Tour” which includes 151 shows in five different continents has brought about a significant economical boost to restaurants, hotels, retail stores and areas surrounding the stadiums where she performs.
According to Fox Business, “What it found was that spending at restaurants within the vicinity of the stadiums she performs at surged 68% on average per day over the duration of her tour.”
Along with the “Eras Tour,” she also has greatly impacted the 2024 NFL season. Her new-found relationship with Kansas City Chiefs Travis Kelce has brought a new wave of fans into the NFL.
As a businesswoman, Taylor Swift shows that she can “shake off” any challenge and turn it into an opportunity.
