“It’s important to see things outside of your own perspective, and how they affect people.”

Sykina Butts recently moved to Missouri from the Cleveland area but is originally from Kilmichael, Mississippi. She transferred from Holmes Community College in Grenada to Delta State University. Sykina is a senior majoring in English with a minor in sociology. She enjoys writing topics based on sociological concepts and theories. Most of her writing stems from her own life experiences and what it means to live as a member of a minority group. She is even working on a memoir, a collection of what she described as letters or essays dedicated to loved ones. One such letter is an article that has been published in the Delta statement entitled “To The Little One’s I Love” and is dedicated to her cousins, explaining the importance of retaining one's sense of self no matter what society tells you. While she has never worked in the Delta Statement, she has expressed an interest in journalism and was led to this class. In her free time, Sykina enjoys traveling to new places, experiencing things on a whim, watching K-Dramas, and trying new foods.
