The Lady Statesmen of Delta State experienced great amounts of success this basketball season. The Lady Statesmen captured their 16th GSC Women’s Basketball Tournament title and the first since 2008-09. DSU finished as the GSC Tournament runner-up the last two seasons falling to Union in last years final 62-50.
Chelsey Rhodes was named the Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player while Alondrea Rush earned her way on the all-tournament squad.
The Delta State University women’s basketball team closed out the 2015-16 season with a 75-64 loss in the opening round of the NCAA South Region Tournament on Friday, March 11 at Fred DeLay Gym on the campus of Union University.
Chelsey Rhodes led all scorers with 26 points.
While discussing what helped contribute to the team’s success, Anissa Jackson said, “One of the things that helped us out a lot was leaving it all out on the floor. We had to play as one so we could all succeed.”
Graduating senior Chelsey Rhodes spoke about what she enjoyed the most throughout her college career. “Winning had to have been one of the most enjoyable things I experienced as a Lady Statesmen.” The Monticello, Ark., native finished her career ranking sixth on the all-time scoring list at Delta State with 1,803 points and second in the record book for threes made and attempted (206-of-616).
